The Austrian power couple Anna Stöhr and Kilian Fischhuber stood atop the podium at the Bouldering World Cup in Toront. Stöhr is undeniably on a huge hot streak, having won five of the six 2013 World Cups so far. She didn’t lead in qualifiers, and a four-way tie in semis mounted excitement for finals. But Stöhr nailed it as the only woman to top all four finals problems. Akiyo Noguchi of Japan actually had fewer attempts than Stöhr on the finals problems (and was the only woman to top all qualifiers problems), but she couldn’t finish the fourth problem. Alex Puccio slid in just behind Noguchi in third place.
Fischhuber was trailing going into finals, in fifth place. Fellow Austrian Jakob Schubert was first going into finals, followed by Jorg Verhoeven of the Netherlands. The first problem in semi-finals seemed to give the most trouble to everyone except Canadian Sean McColl, who completed it in just a few attempts. Fischhuber pulled it together in the final round and went head-to-head with Verhoeven. The Austrian came out on top, but it was a close race.
Three other Americans competed: Meagan Martin had a good showing, coming in 13th; Sierra Blair-Coyle finished in 17th; and Ian Dory finished 24th. Stöhr maintains a huge lead in rankings. Noguchi is second, followed by Shauna Coxsey in third and Puccio in fourth. Though Dmitry Sharafutdinov didn’t make finals in Toronto, he’s kept his lead on the men’s side, followed by Jakob Schubert in second, Guillaume Glairon-Mondet in third, and Jan Hojer in fourth.
